The New Indianapolis Airport will feature a newly-constructed, modern terminal building located between the two existing main runways along with new highway access, new and improved parking and support facilities and improved utilities and airside operations.

 
   
   
   
   
  HISTORICAL AIRPORT TIMELINE:
 
1928  
  Following an Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce site selection process, the City of Indianapolis purchases 900 acres west of the city for a commercial airport to replace an existing National Guard Airport at Stout Field.
   
1931  
  The Indianapolis Airport, housed in a combined hangar, terminal and control tower, is dedicated. Transcontinental and Western Airlines (now TWA) and Embry-Riddle Division of American Airways, Inc. (now American Airlines) begin service at the new airport.
   
1957  
  A new airport passenger terminal complex and parking lot opens.
   
1962  
  The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) is created to govern Indianapolis International Airport, four regional airports and the Downtown Heliport. The seven-member board is appointed by the Mayor of Indianapolis and officials of Marion and Hendricks counties.
   
1968  
  The passenger terminal is expanded with the construction of the TWA/Eastern concourse, the American/Delta septagon and a new roadway.
   
1970
 
 

The Administration/Post Office building is completed.

The airport has its first 1 million passenger year.

   
1972  
  Construction of a new midfield FAA control tower is completed.

  Construction of a new US Air concourse and upper level roadway extensions is completed.
   
1975  
 

The Indianapolis Airport Authority adopts a master plan for airport development. The plan calls for layout of two parallel runways with a non-intersecting crosswind runway while leaving room for a new terminal complex between those runways and new highway access from Interstate 70.

The airport is renamed Indianapolis International Airport.

   
1987  
 

Concourse C and a parking garage are added to the existing terminal complex.

   
1988  
 

The Federal Express hub opens at the airport.

   
1989  
  The U.S. Postal Service express mail hub relocates to Indianapolis.
   
1992  
  A study commissioned by the Indianapolis Airport Authority affirms the need for a new midfield terminal complex.

  The United Airlines Maintenance Center is dedicated.
   
1996  
  The annual passenger volume at the airport exceeds 7 million.
   
1997  
  A new Terminal Master Plan Update for the airport confirms the merits of building a new midfield terminal over continued expansion of the existing terminal complex.
   
1998  
  An independent peer review of the Terminal Master Plan Update concludes that building a new midfield terminal is a preferred solution to airport overcrowding.
   
1999  
  The IAA begins a definition process to estimate the costs of a new midfield terminal complex by setting out general design values.
   
2001  
  The IAA begins a search for Master Design firm to provide comprehensive design services for the entire airport project, now called the new Indianapolis Airport.

2002  
 

St. Louis-based Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc., (HOK), is selected as the Master Design firm.

The IAA announces the selection of nine firms to perform construction manager duties on the New Indianapolis Airport. Named primary construction managers are Indianapolis-based Hunt Construction Group and Turner Construction Co., a Dallas-based firm.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) breaks ground on a project to relocate a portion of Interstate 70 in conjunction with airport construction. The $187 million INDOT project includes a dedicated I-70 interchange to serve the new airport and a new Six Points Road at I-70 interchange.

The Federal Aviation Administration and Indianapolis Airport Authority break ground on construction of a new Air Traffic Control Tower And Terminal Radar Approach Control building.

The IAA Board expands to eight voting members, including representatives of Indianapolis and Marion, Hamilton and Hendricks counties.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority and local officials break ground on construction of the new airport passenger terminal building.

  April: The new FAA Air Traffic Control Tower And Terminal Radar Approach Control building opens.
   
2008
